What some of our guests say…

Our stay at Ategbeh was wonderful. Since Beth was out of town, we were taken care of by her husband Ayo, a very warm and genuine person who made sure we had everything we needed.

Their land has three cabins (two for guests and one they occupy). Each one comes with plenty of space, hardwood floors, local decor, a private bathroom, and porch overlooking a beautiful garden.

The story of Ategbeh is quite incredible, so be sure to ask about it, but in short, it is a large parcel of land that Beth and Ayo opened to the public to be used to grow food at no cost. Many of the surrounding areas are only able to survive because that land exists and is available.

We respect and admire what the two are trying to accomplish as a team, and what they have already accomplished within their own community. We wish them all the best!

Austin and Melissa

When you first tell people you are going to Waterloo for the weekend they do look at you with a most quizzical expression, possibly because it is not right on the beach or in an area they expect. However from the moment I first made contact the experience has been excellent. Beth replied speedily to my enquiries and gave directions on how to find them. On our arrival we were met by Ayo, Beth was away so he was hosting us. This place is an oasis of calm and tranquillity, not just from Freetown but from the hustle of Waterloo itself.

We were made to feel welcome immediately, showed to the cabin, talked through what we needed to know about staying there and checked what we wanted served for breakfast and left us to our own devices. However we knew Ayo was nearby if we needed anything.

The cabin itself is spacious, scrupulously clean and a surprisingly comfortable mattress, mossie nets present. The bathroom has flushing toilet, basin and shower, all worked perfectly well and it is tiled and again very clean.

Breakfast arrived tapalapa, omelette, fruit and coffee, really delicious. We then chose dinner from a surprisingly wide menu so Isatu was able to ensure the ingredients are fresh.

We spent the day just relaxing in the gardens and the cabin, and I managed to get some great shots of the multitude of birds this garden attracts. Kingfisher, sunbirds, heron and a couple I have yet to identify with bright yellow plumage. Also a multitude of butterflies can be seen.

Dinner was served on our terrace and it was excellent. We took our own wine / beer which was no problem at all.

It is evident that Beth and Ayo make this place with their warm welcome and clear love of what they are doing. I thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality shown, we will most definitely be back, it was a real treat to just get away from everything and relax. Ategbeh Gardens is excellent value for money, we had the Red Cabin, at 375,000 a night and breakfast starts at 25,000 with dinners from 40,000.

A Hiden Gem

Ategbeh Garden on first glance resembles a rare oasis or diamond in the rough, but as the time of your stay progresses you begin to realise that it is a deliberate point of cultural osmosis, designed to show you how to see the beauty of Waterloo and the surrounding Western area. With hard work, ingenuity and an enviable capacity to harness serendipity, Ayo and Beth have forged a home away from home that welcomes locals and visitors equally.

There literally is no other accommodation on the peninsula, dare I say, in the country, which simultaneously satisfies and challenges ones expectation of a get away in such a delightful way. I will never forget my experience at Ategbeh Garden and I will definitely be returning.

luxurious without the expense and quaint without the old fashioned

Our cabin was spacious, and the setting was beautiful – looking out into vegetable gardens. Food was excellent. Perfect for someone wanting some rest and relaxation, or wanting a quiet place to escape the hustle and bustle of Freetown.

Relaxing setting - a real escape from Freetown

Ategbeh Garden is a stunning oasis in an intriguing country, and is the perfect place to explore the area from.

Ayo and Beth are wonderful hosts, warm and extremely hospitable, and are more than happy to share their local knowledge to give you a truly unique experience.
The accommodation is faultless, clean and modern, beautifully constructed, and set in a lovely garden, and with the hammock on the balcony is in itself a perfect place to kick back and relax.

One thing that always concerns me when traveling is the food, but I have absolutely no complaints here. African dishes are prepared by a local village cook, Isatu, and are amazing. More western style meals are also available and are prepared by the hosts, to a very high standard.
In short, if you are thinking of staying on the Freetown peninsula for any length of time at all, don’t miss the opportunity to experience Ategbeh Garden.
